What Is Grass DePIN?

Grass is a DePIN protocol on Solana that lets users monetize their unused internet bandwidth. You run a Grass node via desktop or Android, your bandwidth is used by vetted institutions for things like web crawling and data collection, and in return you earn Grass Points and, periodically, GRASS tokens.

The project is built by Wynd Labs and has backing from notable investors like Polychain Capital and Tribe Capital. Grass aims to become “the data layer for AI” by building an open, user-owned web crawl instead of letting a handful of big Web2 players own all the data exhaust. GRASS has a fixed supply of 1 billion tokens with allocations for community airdrops, future incentives, investors, contributors and the Grass Foundation.

For users, the core loop is simple: stay online, share bandwidth, accumulate Points, and wait for snapshot and airdrop events that convert those Points into GRASS. It’s more of a passive DePIN play than an active DeFi farm.

Time vs Reward: Is GRASS Worth Your Time?

TGE status first: Grass completed its main Token Generation Event on 28 October 2024. Around 100 million GRASS (10% of supply) were airdropped to roughly a couple million addresses on Solana, making it one of the most distributed airdrops on the chain. The token listed around $0.87 and later spiked above $3.90 before retracing hard; at the time of writing, it trades around the $0.30 area with a mid-range market cap for a DePIN token.

Where the upside is now: the big “first airdrop” moment has already happened, but Grass is still distributing large chunks of supply via Season 2. Public docs and third-party analyses indicate 100M GRASS went to Season 1 and a much larger 170M GRASS (17% of supply) is earmarked for Season 2 and future community rewards. That’s substantial – but it’s spread across many epochs and potentially millions of nodes.

Reward reality check: early anecdotal reports from Stage 1 show one user earning roughly $142 for ~20k Grass Points at much higher token prices. Season 2 now runs with more users, a more complex points formula, and a lower token price. Your effective “dollars per point” is almost certainly lower than in the earliest days, and reward splits heavily favor high-quality, always-on bandwidth (good ping, unique IP, strong region demand).

Macro signals: on the bullish side, Grass appears in major DePIN research rundowns as a key Solana DePIN project, and it has since raised around $10M in a bridge round led by Polychain and Tribe Capital, with reports of millions of monthly active users and multiple 7-figure AI clients. On the bearish side, a huge 181M-token unlock roughly one year after TGE (mostly investors and contributors) dumped a large chunk of supply into the market, and GRASS trades far below its all-time high.

Our verdict: Grass is no longer a “pre-TGE moonshot” – it’s a live, heavily traded DePIN token with real business traction and real dilution. Farming points in Season 2 via your node still makes sense if:

• You have cheap, reliable broadband and can stay online many hours per day.
• You’re already active in DePIN and want mid-risk exposure to an AI-data narrative.
• You’re fine treating GRASS as a long-term bet on their data rollup and AI partnerships rather than a quick flip.

If you pay a lot for mobile data or can’t keep a device online, the cost (and frustration around snapshot and claim timelines) can outweigh the token rewards.

Risks & Things to Watch

Tokenomics & unlock overhang: GRASS follows a multi-year vesting schedule with large unlocks for investors and contributors; that later 181M unlock roughly one year after TGE visibly pressured price, and more unlocks are scheduled over several years. If you’re farming, you’re farming into continuing dilution.

Bandwidth & device risk: While Grass emphasizes that only verified partners can route traffic and that user data or personal browsing aren’t collected, you’re still letting a third-party app proxy traffic through your connection. Run it on machines and networks you’re comfortable with, not on critical work servers.

Regulatory & geographic limits: Some jurisdictions (and at times, US/Canada payouts) have restrictions or delays for token distributions. Always check the latest eligibility list before committing serious time.

Operational risk: Missed snapshots, wrong wallets, or not claiming in time have already burned some users in earlier epochs. Keep notifications on, verify links, and bookmark official channels. None of this is financial advice – always DYOR and only stake time and bandwidth you can afford to risk.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Join Grass DePIN

1. Sign up with a referral link (optional, but boosts points).

   Visit the Grass registration page using your chosen referral (for example, the AirdropBuzz partner link: app.grass.io/register). Create an account with a verified email and a strong, unique password.

2. Download the official app (desktop or Android).

   From the official website or dashboard, download the Grass desktop client for Windows/macOS or the Android app from a trusted store. Avoid any “Grass” binaries shared in random Telegram groups – only use official links.

3. Install & log in.

   Run the installer, log in with the account you just created, and grant the minimum necessary permissions. On desktop, you’ll typically see a small tray icon confirming the node is running and connected.

4. Let the node start earning Grass Points.

   Once connected, Grass starts tracking:

   • Uptime Points for staying online.
   • Network Points for actual bandwidth consumed, weighted by region, quality and demand.

   Keep your device online as much as practical to accumulate points faster.

5. Link a Solana wallet.

   Before any snapshot or airdrop, you must link a Solana wallet (e.g. Phantom, Solflare) inside the Grass dashboard. This wallet will receive your GRASS when distribution opens. Missing this step is a classic way to miss an airdrop.

6. Hit the minimum points for Season 2.

   Across CEX campaigns and community guides, a common baseline is at least 500 total Grass Points (Uptime plus Network) before the snapshot window to qualify for Season 2 distributions. More points typically place you in a higher reward tier, but rules can change, so always read the latest announcements.

7. Stay active through snapshot windows.

   Season 2 snapshots have been reported as occurring over a roughly month-long window toward year-end, with Grass recording your cumulative Points and wallet status. Don’t shut down the app during this period if you want maximum credit.

8. Monitor announcements for claim details.

   After each epoch or season, the flow is usually: snapshot → eligibility check → claim window. When claim opens, you’ll need to:

   • Visit the official airdrop or claim page from Discord, X, or the dashboard.
   • Connect the same Solana wallet you linked earlier.
   • Confirm your GRASS allocation and pay Solana gas (usually tiny).
9. Optionally stake or hold your GRASS.

   Once you’ve received tokens, you can hold, trade on supported exchanges, or stake via the Grass Foundation staking interface and third-party validators to earn additional yield (with standard staking risks). Staking is optional and should be treated as a separate decision from simply running a node.

10. Keep an eye on future seasons & unlocks.

    Grass is clearly playing a long game: new earning seasons, technical upgrades (like the Sion multimodal data pipeline), token buybacks, and a planned “Sovereign Data Rollup.” Balance those growth plans against future unlocks and your own risk tolerance.
