What is Cloudflare Pay?
Cloudflare Pay is the identity and namespace layer for Cloudflare Wallets, a new programmable wallet infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents and machine-to-machine micropayments. Officially launched on August 4, 2026, a Cloudflare Wallet handle gives an AI agent a human-readable, verifiable identity (e.g., research.yourbrand.cloudflare.pay) that merchants can trust.
Cloudflare utilizes a dual-tier architecture:
- Account Wallets (Humans): The central treasury managed by a human administrator, responsible for funding and overseeing stablecoin balances.
- Virtual Wallets (AI Agents): Subordinate wallets assigned to autonomous AI bots. Humans set strict spending limits, approved merchant lists, and maximum payment sizes via API keys.
The system is built to utilize the x402 Protocol Gateway, which leverages the long-dormant HTTP 402 "Payment Required" status code. When an AI hits a paywall, the server requests an instant micropayment. Cloudflare settles these transactions using USDC on Coinbase's Base L2 network, allowing for sub-cent transaction fees and instant finality.
