What was Aether?
Aether was marketed as a Solana-based DePIN (Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network) designed to let users earn tokens by sharing unused internet bandwidth. The project instructed users to connect their Solana wallets, register via email, and download an "Aether Core Client" to begin earning network credits (CR) and future $AET tokens.
However, the entire project was an elaborate trap. The anonymous team utilized the hype around DePIN and Solana airdrops to distribute malicious software. Users who clicked the download link for the advertised 12.4 MB "version 0.4.2" client were instead redirected to download a hidden 98.8 MB executable named Setup_Network.exe. This file has since been identified as malware—typically an infostealer designed to scrape private keys, seed phrases, and passwords directly from a victim's device.
Did the Aether Airdrop Happen?
No. The airdrop was completely fake. The $25,000 promotional giveaways, the network credits tracking dashboard, and the official documentation were all carefully crafted to build trust so that users would drop their guard and install the malicious client.
Post-Mortem: Risks & Red Flags We Spotted
Looking back, several massive red flags pointed directly to this malware outcome:
- The Download Mismatch: The filename and file size on the download page did not match the file that was actually delivered to the user's computer.
- Blacklisted Domain: Independent security scanners eventually caught up, flagging
aetherproduct.orgwith critical trust scores and blacklisting the domain for phishing and malware distribution. - Anonymous Team & Unverified Code: There was no public GitHub repository, no open-source code for the client, and the founders remained entirely anonymous.
- Missing Audits: The project demanded users install software on their primary machines without providing a single verifiable security audit.
